That Lorn track from Sunday reminded me somewhat of a certain beat tape, especially given the structure of the EP it’s from. The low, growling basslines, aggressive breakbeats, strange voice samples… it’s kind of like this track, except it seems to want to destroy you and/or your subwoofer. So let’s back off from that with a little bit of wonky hip hop, slow, hot, and sticky, perfect for a blazing summer day.
You may know I like to hear strange or exceptionally powerful snare or clap sounds. This track has a nice, crisp, crunchy clap, like the sound of biting into an apple. Combined with the throbbing kick drum, the buzzing synths, the pulsing background lines, and the occasional strange voice sample coming out of nowhere for no discernible reason. Very thick, very heavy, very sticky. It’ll clog up your head for a while, you might want to get something cold to drink and stay out of the sun.
If you listen to the track all the way through you’ll hear what is essentially the intro to the rest of the tape, ABC Alphabeat (or possibly Alphabeats ABC), released on semi-experimental hip-hop netlabel Error Broadcast. It’s a collaboration between Swede:art (creator of this track), A-rec, and Fuer.steps. It has 17 beat-saturated tracks somewhere between the statuses of rough sketch to unfinished song. Beat tapes are like that, they don’t need to repeat more than they need to. Just get to the point of the track, then move on. If you want Swede:art with a polished presentation, he does have a new release on Tokyo Dawn Records you might be interested in.
