DL Room Temperature Liquid Plastic
Subsurface Flowers is Mushen’s album exploring the macro-micro topography of being and all the beauty blossoming there abouts. I don’t know if it was psychedelics, meditation or a happy helmet that grew a halo around his head but Mushen was on a good tip when he was banging these jams using the unquantized recording features of renoise.
Off kilter nuschool beat wonk laced with dub-wize bass and keys has made “Room Temperature Liquid Plastic” my goto track from this ep—at ease in an idm, downtempo, digital dub or instrumental hiphop set.
The album stays cohesive in sound but the tracks don’t fall into the trap of sounding same-y and each brings something new to the table. I especially enjoyed the beat drops in “untitled”—out of no where for a second then instantly had my head bobbing, followed by some synth injections dripping with summer heat and melancholy. “i can’t feel my arms” starts out floating in some outer-space sensory-deprivation before receiving a similarly wonderful ¿what-yes! beat drop. The archive.org page provides a nice preview so you can take as you choose from the field of Subsurface Flowers.
Mushen just one handle used by the label head of THEMRECORDS and California native Eric Neil Johnson, with his kallipolis project providing an outlet for breakcore sounds.
