Earlier this week Pause re-released Peer’s amazing Dances, similar to what they did with little-scale’s Dynasty. It’s available in high-quality mp3s and it’s easily one of the best chip releases of the year, so get it.
Dances is less of an EP and more of one long song, divided up into individual parts for easy listening, somewhat like Belle Isle Raceway. Individual songs merge into the next one, with some tracks seeming to contain more than one song if you’re not paying attention. As such, choosing a single track from it will not be representative of the others. This one, Dance 3, does a good job of showing what to expect from the others. It has beautifully created complex melodies and impressive technical beats, both accomplished from two Gameboys linked together. It goes from ambient to drum & bass over the course of about a minute and a half, and the transition feels completely natural.
But like I said, the rest of Dances is not the same as this. While the technical skill and melodic composition remain, the frantic drum & bass rhythms do not. There’s plenty of love for the four-four groove too, particularly in Dance 2, and the rest of it is generally slower, which isn’t saying much given the high speed of this track.
Be sure to get Dances, and check out the rest of Pause’s catalog for more melodic and technical chipmusic. They have a proggy sound, which is to be expected when one of the guys running it is Disasterpeace.
Also, last Sunday k9d made an awesome mix instead of an I Love Copyleft post, for those of you who haven’t checked it out yet. It’s called Celestial Navigation and it contains approximately 20 times the music of this post. It’s also part of his series of netaudio podcasts, Cockroaches, and he’s done quite a few over the years.
