DL Mayan Pilot by Splashdown

cover for Blueshift

Splashdown is my favorite band that I didn’t learn about until about ten years after they broke up. They mixed a bunch of styles together into something that sounds really good. Regretfully, their second album was shelved by their record label and was never released. Lucky for us, the internet has taken care of that for them.

This particular track has an obscene amount of funk, maybe the most out of any other Splashdown track. It doesn’t have the electric guitar a lot of their other tracks do and sounds a lot lighter. At the same time it also sounds full, showing off the excellent production of their unreleased album Blueshift. It also has Melissa Kaplan’s distinctive, cryptic vocals. The Mayan Pilot needs no aeroplane.

If you like this, there are several file dumps of Splashdown songs around the internet (encouraged by the band after they split up) that have their entire discography uploaded. I used this one though this one and this one work and have extra goodies. Remastered versions of two of their releases are also up on iTunes.

Be sure to check out the individual member’s more recent works. Adam Buhler (guitar / bass) is half of Anarchy Club, Kasson Crooker (synths / programming) does solo work as Symbion Project and started Freezepop (he recently left due to his awesome day job taking up too much time), and Melissa Kaplan (vocals) is Universal Hall Pass.

And last, I find it amusing that Splashdown used to be big in Rochester.
