You’re lost under the stars in a forest dense with crawlies and echos that leave you none reassured. At least that’s the vibe I kept humming to myself as I selected tracks to jockey at my friend Paul Baker’s art exhibit last Saturday, ringing in the Spring Equinox proper.
Siberia, Russia was the last place I had in mind but that’s where The Kirbi crafted this timeless ambient jam that kicks off with an undeniable flute-tro before picking up with some seriously funked bass + drum action that stays energized ‘till an unassuming break. the air is cleared and any foggy minds are back at it for the reprise, just short enough to demand a rewind.
None of the other tracks on the Sunport Album quite do it for me which is quite often the case with ambient—it either hits the nail on the head or is way off. But The Gold God certainly does the trick so perhaps we can look forward to some future gems from The Kirbi. I also enjoy his title track off his previous island of the unrealized hopes album, which shares in the simplistic, repetitive core minimally flourished for maximum effect, but with more hip hop influences including scratch zippers and curious vocal samples.
